Living Next To An Open Cast Gold Mine - Waihi Central School

I have been reading Digging for Gold this week by Jan Maguiness. The story is about an open cast mine called the Martha mine. They started mining there in 1878. It is 250metres deep, which is the size of 10 swimming pools. It is 860metres long which is 34 swimming pools and 600metres wide which is 24 swimming pools. In the future when they have finished mining they plan to turn it into a lake. A car is the size of half of one of the wheels on the dump truck. Every week about 1 million dollars worth of gold and silver is taken out of the rock. There were 175 kilometres of tunnels.
After I had finished reading we went and had a look at the Martha Mine website.  We seen pictures of the open cast mine and pictures of what they thought the mine would look like when they had finished mining. We also seen a video that some kids had made that lived in Waihi where the mine is. The video was about the mine, they  asked questions and shared thier information about the water treatment, about what they did with the waste rock and tailings and what the plans where fore the future of the mine. Martha mine has spent 11 million dollars on the water treatment setup. The waste rock and tailings are made back into new pasture. The plan to make the mine into a lake and park when they are finished mining. The gold and silver gets melted down into nuggets and bars to be sold.

Pizza Making

Mmmmmmmmmm PIZZA!!! On Thursday the 31st of March our class made pizza as part of our measurement unit! We got put into groups of 3, in our groups we had to decide on our topping and we had to bring them to school. We started by making the dough bases once we had finished them we put our toppings on and put them in the oven. Waiting for them was torture we couldn't wait to eat them they looked delicious. They looked so good that we ate them in the cooking room because we couldn't wait to get back to the classroom. We were having so much fun that we didn't even realise we worked through morning tea! WHAT AN AWESOME DAY!!!

Fundraiser for the victims of the Christchurch Earthquake

Dance, Dance, Dance...
On Friday the 18th of March we had a fundraising day, to raise money for the Christchurch Earthquake victims. As part of the days fundraising events we had a mufti day, a sausage sizzle and a lunchtime disco. We all had a great day, everyone got in behind the cause and we managed to raise $517. What a great outcome.

Room 1a wish to send all our love and support to the people of Christchurch, many of us have family and friends that have been affected.
Kia kaha, stay strong and keep your heads up.

We also had new wacky fun events such as; a water slide, running across the swimming pool, an obstacle course, sack races and three legged races. Our favourite events were the water slide, running across the pool. shot-put, long jump and running. It was a great day, we were all very tired but are looking forward to next years athletics.

Fun with balloons

In the first week of school we did a lot of team building activities. One of the team building activities we did was trying to keep the balloon off the ground using only our mouths. We found this really really hard but we had heaps of fun!!!

Here's us trying...

Topic

For our topic this term we are learning about the risks that other children our age face. As part of our unit we will be creating Safety Savvy plans to help others deal with these risks.

Yesterday we went around the school identifying risks. We were amazed at all the small hazards we found around the school.

As we were coming to the end of our search we discovered a big hazard being illiminated. It was a tree being removed by a crane.

Here are some pictures of it being removed.

2011

Hello and welcome to Room 1a!

We've had a great start to the year in our newly created classroom.

Our auction has started this week; students will be able to earn money over the term and on the last day of the term we will have a mystery auction where they will be able to spend the money they have earnt.
Students will be able to earn money by attending school, completing and handing in homework on time, winning challenges, having a can do attitude, participating in classroom activities and being a supportive class member. As well as being able to earn money students can also be fined! Students may be fined for not doing homework, being late to class, challenge requirements and bad behaviour (which I'm sure will be no body).

We have been doing all sorts of activities in our first week including games and challenges. In maths we are looking at different strategies for problem solving. A particularly challenging activity was lining up from youngest to oldest. This may sound easy, but try doing it only speaking maori. This was a challenge. This activity was a great opportunity for the class to work together as a team. We managed to complete the task, with only a few people receiving fines for speaking English.

Have had a fantastic week, Room 1a are a great bunch and I look forward to the rest of the term.
